Competition in the RS Vareos is hotting up with many helms
travelling long distances to pit their skills against each
other. At Carsington's first Vareo event seventeen boats
competed in a three race series of windward-leeward courses.
All the boats were on the line when the first gun went and
places continued to change throughout the fleet as helms
got to grips with the wind shifts. Finally Stephen Blake,
having the advantage of sailing on his home water, established
a clear lead and went on to win by twenty boat lengths with
visitor Martin Barrett having to settle for second place.
Helms were even keener on the second start with Bob Pearson,
revelling in the increased wind conditions, getting away to
be first round the windward mark. The pack was hot on his
heels and Stephen Blake again mastered the tricky downwind
legs to pull through to another win with a visitor, Carl
Whitehead, having to settle for second. The final race
was fiercely contested with Ian Hibbitt, who already had
two third places to his credit, showing everyone the way
until he uncharacteristically capsized. Martin Barrett
quickly took advantage to go on to win with Paul Kelly a
well deserved second. Stephen Blake, after a poor start,
worked his way up to third. Final places were very tight
with first and second separated by only one point then
three boats on equal points tying for third.
